Saguache County, Colorado

The Sangre de Cristo mountains at sunset.
Saguache county is located in southern Colorado. The center of the
county is located within the historic San Luis Valley. The Sangre De
Cristo mountains are at our Eastern border, Alamosa is to the South,
Gunnison to the West, and Salida to our North.
The county encompasses National Forests, including the San Isabel,
Gunnison and Rio Grande. It also includes the towns of Center, Villa
Grove, Moffat, Mosca, Crestone and the county center, Saguache.
Points of Interest:
The Great Sand Dunes National Monument and Wilderness is in our
Southeastern area.
Diversity:
Saguache county has many faces and cultures - possibly more than any
place in the US. Thus diversity and tolerance are keywords
for this famous area that includes decedents of old Spanish settlers,
ranchers, farmers, monasteries from nearly all world religions,
non-profit organizations experimenting with sustainable agriculture and
building, and some of the nicest old fashioned people in the U.S.
Ironically, while long called "the bloodless valley" by
Native Americans (because of its history of non-violence), the mountains
on one side of the valley are called the "Sangre de Cristos"
(blood of Christ).
This is old west "open range" country, where family
ranchers and farmers have lived and worked for generations. On the other
hand, the Rocky mountains and Crestone area have a mix of "old
timers", alternative home-builders who've built everything from
traditional houses to domes, straw bale housing and even fantasy-like
"hobbit holes", and diverse religious groups including Tibetan
Buddhists and Christian monasteries.
